Welcome To La Toti
The island of La Toti (Ile de La Tortue in French) is a small island just off the northwest coast of Haiti. The inhabitants, fishermen and farmers, struggle to maintain their existence. Environmental degradation began under French colonialism, and is perpetuated by poverty and neglect. This beautiful island suffers massive deforestation, flooding, pollution, sanitation problems and lack of adequate health care. Our organization works in partnership with Haitians to complete community development projects that improve the quality of life for the people of Latoti and to empower them to rebuild their communities and secure their future.
The issues people face are enormous:

Deforestation and Erosion
Without trees to hold the soil, storms and hurricanes wash away fertile topsoil, crops, and homes. This run-off also harms fishing conditions, creating a “dead zone” close to shore.
Sanitation and Water Safety
Water Borne Illnesses are the cause most sickness in Haiti, and roughly 90% of homes and community water sources have contaminated water. Diarrhea and other bacterial infections are common.
Inadequate Health Care
Most illnesses that arise are treatable or preventable with even a modest health care system. But without the resources and personnel, most residents must travel to another town or just rest and hope.
